Homework for December 7

Today in class you did a survey of your classmates on a chosen topic. I was really pleased with the questions you have written for your survey and with the visual aids you have made using the PowerPoint. Excellent job!

To help you prepare for the presentation, I'd like you to do the following:

1. Interview the classmates who were absent today. You can talk to them personally or you can e-mail them your survey and ask them to do the questionnaire and e-mail the answers to you.

2. Summarize the results of your survey and prepare visual aids for your presentation. You need to prepare one graph / pie chart / table per question. For example, if you have 5 questions, you need to have 5 visual aids. Use different types of visual aids.

3. Make a poster with your visual aids. The poster needs to have a topic of your survey and 5 visual aids. To make sure that your poster with visual aids is effective and helpful, please ask yourself questions listed on p. 28 under Presentation Tip.

4. Write an outline of your presentation. See p. 31 in the textbook to help you with the outline. You can also use Hannah's outline on p. 25 as an example how to write an outline of your presentation.

Note: Type and e-mail your outline to me by Sunday evening.

5. Make note cards from your outline. Don't just make notes; make note cards. "Dos and don'ts"
of making and using note cards can be found on p. 16 of the textbook.

6. Write the text of the presentation and e-mail it to me by Sunday evening. When writing the text of your presentation, please use a copy of Unit 2 Language Summary given in class. (If you were absent, please click here to download a copy.)

Note: I will check your outlines and texts of the presentations and sent them back to you with suggestions and corrections, if any, on Monday.

7. Practice for a presentation for the next class.

8. When you come to the next class on Wednesday, please bring the following with you:

a) poster
b) note cards
c) printed outline

Note cards and outlines will be graded and points will be a part of your total grade for the presentation. The grade for this presentation will constitute a substantial percentage of your total grade for the course, so work hard and do your best.

Next class, you will do presentations in groups of 3 or 4 using your posters. Everyone will do their presentations 3-4 times. In this way, you will have a chance to practice your presentations and improve your presentation skills.

If you have any questions, please feel free to see me at the office or contact me via e-mail.

See you in class next Wednesday. Looking forward to your presentations!
